Handling Guidelines for Antarctic Meteorite Samples

Important: Sublease of the Antarctic meteorite samples to individuals other than those listed as the principal investigator or co-researchers in the "NIPR Research Program for Antarctic Meteorites" is strictly prohibited.
  • Sample Return: Please return the samples to us before your designated research period ends. If the research duration has passed and you still possess samples, please ensure their immediate return. Regularly check and maintain the appropriate storage conditions for these samples.
  • Updates to Research: If you make changes to your research approach – whether that's in your analysis method, co-researcher roles, or the research timeline – contact us. We might request an updated research plan or a new proposal depending on the changes.
  • Major Projects: If you're thinking of incorporating the meteorite samples in larger-scale projects (like those managed by institutions), drop us a line for a tailored discussion.

  • How to request our samples

Interested in researching our Antarctic meteorites? Follow these steps:

    • 1. Download and fill out the research plan: Research Plan(word) | Research Plan(pdf)
    • 2. Email the completed form to the provided address found in the application.
    • 3. Require specialized analysis? Contact the curator before submission.

Note: In certain cases, research plans may undergo peer review.

    Sample Handling & Return

    • Approved research plans grant the principal investigator access to the meteorite samples.
    • Significant changes in methodology, organization, or theme? Inform and obtain approval from our curator.
    • Done with research? Promptly send back all samples, including any remnants from destructive analysis.

    Publication Protocols

Sharing your research findings? Do remember:

    • Forward an electronic copy to the Antarctic Meteorite Research Center.
    • Include an acknowledgment in your publication, crediting the Antarctic Meteorite Research Center for sample provision.

    Using the Meteorite Processing Facility

Our facility isn't commonly shared. However, for special sample preparations or if you want to examine meteorite thin sections or the specimen itself, contact the curator.

    The Antarctic Meteorite Symposium

Since 1976, the Antarctic Meteorite Research Center has proudly hosted the Symposium on Antarctic Meteorite. This annual event usually takes place as part of the 'Symposium on Polar Science' organized by the National Institute of Polar Research.

The symposium showcases cutting-edge research on Antarctic meteorites and associated subjects, drawing researchers from all over Japan and around the world. Researchers who have worked with Antarctic meteorites allocated from the National Institute of Polar Research are especially encouraged to share their findings at the symposium. Additionally, every edition of the event features special lectures from one or two esteemed experts in the field.
